My journey with Nigeria traces back to 1946, a pivotal year when I embarked on a voyage to Kano, where my parents resided. For three formative years, I immersed myself in the cultural tapestry of Nigeria. However, my educational pursuits led me to the United Kingdom, where I pursued my studies.
In 1966, I found myself returning to Nigeria, this time to the vibrant city of Ibadan. Initially, I undertook a postdoctoral fellowship, delving deeper into my field of chemistry. Subsequently, I transitioned into a lectureship role within the esteemed chemistry department. It was during this time in Ibadan that I encountered my future husband, sparking a journey intertwined with love and academic pursuits.
Our mutual passion for exploration and discovery led us to become active members of the Field Society. We eagerly participated in their meetings and excursions, fostering a deep connection with the natural wonders and cultural richness of Nigeria. My dedication to the society even saw me assuming the role of secretary for the Ibadan branch, further solidifying my commitment to the community.
As the years passed, I bid farewell to Nigeria at the conclusion of 1976, marking the end of a significant chapter in my life. Though physical distance separated me from Nigeria, my heart remained tethered to the memories and experiences forged during my time there. Despite only returning once since my departure, my enduring passion for the Nigerian Field Society continued unabated, a testament to the enduring impact of my time in the vibrant nation.
